      Shit. Wow. Scary.

Lucky you don't live in China, huh.

You live in a country that has free democratic elections.

If you don't like the guy in charge, it's because you're in the minority of people in your country.

Is America conceivably going to turn to communism any time soon? Nope.

Woohoo! You are free! Congrats. Get rid of your kids. I mean guns. Get rid of your guns. Sorry, Freudian slip...

So what happens if you get a shooter open fire in the car park of Walmart armed citizens shoot back some are not very good shots and the bullets land near other people who thinks they are the shooter, open fire on the citizens before long you would have mayhem people shooting at each other. The police arrive and start's shooting at every one.The original shooter who started it moves away to find another target knowing all the available police are busy.So where does the sicko go?He head for a nice easy target like a hospital. I try the maternity ward he will think plenty of targets and there cannot run way....

The point was, you keep coming up with silly scenarios, like a walmart parking lot and people blasting away at each other and shooting innocent bystanders.
Well, Shooter happened to have seen the video he posted, where a cop is doing a routine traffic stop and a car pulls up not 10' from him and the driver jumps out with an axe and charges the cop. Not a single word. Just comes at the cop with his axe.
      The cop shoots the guy.
The rule in close in combat is if someone gets within 10' of you with a knife (or axe) you are already in deep, deep trouble, talking time is over, time to stop them.

Shooter is damn glad that cop had a gun. The cop is probably still cleaning the shit out of his underroos.

And as weird and off the wall as that instance was, it was far more real than the useless speculation you and LXV200 and the other gun control people keep coming up with.

Shooter exaggerate the importance of this one incident, as if it is the one thing in all the universe that justifies guns in the first place.

I'm sure it that cop are Bruce Lee, he wouldn't have used his gun...

I have forgotten his name and may go back and try to find the bit but I once saw an
Australian comedian talk about guns and addressed the fact that even though Australia banned assault weapons people could still buy them on the black market.
And he admitted that saying "Yes you can buy an assault weapon on the black market. For $30,000. But if you have a spare $30,000 you don't need to be a criminal."

If I confront a robber in my home, I'm showing him my gun and warning him to please leave. I'm not shooting him.
Hell if I shoot a criminal in my home the odds are his family will find a lawyer to sue me and sure I will probably win but what will it cost me to hire a lawyer to represent me. Besides do you know how much shot guys bleed all over everything...fuck, I'd have to hire professional cleaners.

If someone is in your house, likelihood is they are desperate drug addicts, looking for easy cash. They aren't wanting a fight. You stand there, tell them to GET OUT, you don't need to show a gun... they'll go.

Ok - America has the added problem of such huge availability of guns, so - bigger chance of them being armed, and if things go bad, you're dead, or they're dead.

Sadly - break-ins tend to occur more often in poor areas... Only time we've been broken into was when we lived in one of the worst suburbs of a capital city here in Oz. Also was the only time we had property damage - fence pails removed, car door kicked, rock through the window... I guess people figure if you're in a richer area, you'll have home security alarms etc... Also it's a crime of convenience - burglaries are more likely a crime of low socio economic areas, whereas rich folk just go for white collar crime.

Now Shooter has said several times before that when he stopped being a cop he sold all his guns and hasn't owned or carried one since. He doesn't particularly like guns around him, but not because of the gun, usually because of who is holding it.

He thinks there are three kinds of gun carriers.
The kind who know what they are doing, know why they carry one, and they can be counted on to know what to do if the gun becomes important to a situation. Shooter has no issue with being around them, in fact he feels much safer around them. They, Shooter thinks, are the people we want carrying guns.

The other kind carry a gun because they like them. They like to flash it around and let people know they carry it and talk about it and caress it and Shooter gets very nervous around them. They more often than not haven't thought about the reality of actually firing a gun at someone, haven't considered how life changing it can be, and can be counted on to eventually shoot off a toe or put one through a wall. They make Shooter nervous. He'll generally just walk away and stay away from them.

The third kind have serious issues. They're the ones who show up at a mall, or their workplace, or a school, and start shooting. For them, guns are a tool to be used to make whatever point they feel is critical to the world to get. And to make that point, they kill people. And most often, they are wiling to die to make their point. These are the people who should never be near a gun, or for that matter anything that can be used to hurt or kill people.

Shooter will defend to the end the right of the first two kinds to carry and own guns. The second kind should, to put it bluntly, get their asses kicked every time they treat a gun as anything but what it is; a deadly tool. But he would be most happy to have either kind around when the third kind shows up.

Now beyond that, in America, owning a gun is a guaranteed right. People not living here (and a fucking lot of those who do live here) don't understand why we have a 2nd amendment, or why it is every bit as important as any other right guaranteed to us by the constitution, the amendments, and the bill of rights.

But understand this, if nothing else. The right to own a gun in America is a constitutional guarantee. It must be defended every bit as aggressively as any other right guaranteed by the constitution, the amendments, and the bill of rights. By design, modifying or changing or diluting any of these rights is difficult and requires that a whole lot of people agree to any changes first. And by design, our Congress, our President and our government bureaucrats can't just change any of those rights.

    Deal with that first.

    1. darkride
If the 2A does not allow for enforceable gun reform laws, then yes - it should be amended first, to remove that issue. If you end up, as polls appear to suggest, with more than 60% of the US population now believing in gun reform - that day may arrive. If people can continue to hit the NRA in its hip pocket, and money stops flowing to Republicans (and Democrats?), I'm sure opinion in the Capitol will change.

You still think the a swer is to restrict gun access across the board.
2 of 3 groups that own guns in the US aren't the problem.
The third group that is the problem is small. Controling that group is whats needed.

I like your categories, shooter - sums them up quite well.

Unfortunately, it doesn't account for the fact that ANYONE can become #3. You can be #1 all your life, then something happens, an incident that triggers you, or a chemical imbalance that's been slowly getting worse and untreated, unnoticed, and then you're #3. You could not even be a gun owner to begin with, but then fall into the pit of despair and then - in large parts of the US - go and buy a gun with little checks or waiting periods or anything, and use it.

No country, no government, no one can identify #3 people, because they can be ANYONE. And, you may not be #3 right now, but become them later.

That's why removing guns is a workable solution. It works. It has been proven to reduce gun deaths in every country where it has been implemented. At the cost of - not being able to own a gun (or at least, having hoops to jump through to own a gun, making it less appealing.) It is that simple.

      Removing guns is not workable.
Even if you get rid of that pesky 2nd you can not eliminate all guns.

You should get familiar with guns. Go to a range. It might help you get rid of your unreasoned fear of them.

I would not take @shootersa claiming he was once a cop at face value. People can claim to be anything they want to be on the internet and especially this forum. I have never personally seen anything that would make me believe he was once a cop and lots of things that have convinced me he never was.

Personally, I love seeing a tourist carrying a backpack filled with agendas pick the statistical source to use which most supports their claims.

For example, PBS also did these statistics (https://www.pbs.org/newshour/health...king-of-gun-deaths-heres-where-the-u-s-stands)
      as has the CDC (https://www.cdc.gov/violenceprevention/firearms/fastfact.html)
      and the US Govt (https://usafacts.org/data/topics/security-safety/crime-and-justice/firearms/firearm-deaths/)
There are many sources on gun violence out there and almost all of them play one kind of game or another.
For example, when discussing children's deaths, most lump gang shootings into that category too.

@Dark chose Politifact, and they chose to use the UN.
Politifact is not a neutral arbiter of the truth anymore than is Fox News.
Anyone who presents Politifact as such immediately loses all credibility.

Funny how anon has to lie to make a point.
He should have done his own fact checking.
Gun Laws in Chicago - Feldman Criminal Defense
"Though it is possible to obtain guns illegally, Chicago gun laws exist to regulate the sale, possession, and use of firearms and ammunition in the state of Illinois. In order to possess firearms or ammunition, residents of Illinois must apply for and obtain a Firearm Owners Identification (FOID) card issued by Illinois State Police. The state police are also responsible for issuing concealed carry licenses to qualified applicants aged 21 or older who pass a 16-hour training course.

Legislation for different types of firearms and ammunition vary. Open carry is not allowed in the state of Illinois and vehicle carry is only allowed with a concealed carry license. There are no state-level magazine restrictions and no current law banning the possession of assault weapons.

Background checks are required for private sales, and there is a waiting period to take possession of a firearm after purchasing it. There is also a red flag law in which family members or police can petition the Court to issue an order to confiscate firearms from a person deemed immediately dangerous to themselves or others.

Recent Changes to Chicago’s Gun Laws
On January 1 of 2019, the state of Illinois implemented several changes to their gun laws. The purpose driving these changes was to make it more difficult for people to obtain a gun and easier for law enforcement personnel to take guns away from known criminals and people who are deemed dangerous.

Here is a summary of three recent changes:

    1. The waiting period to purchase a rifle has been increased from 24 hours to 72 hours between the time you purchased the gun and when you could take possession of it.
    2. Gun owners are required to obtain a Firearm Owner’s Identification Card (FOID) which must be renewed in a process that can be quite lengthy. The 2019 amendment ensures that an expired FOID card will remain valid as long as the renewal application was submitted prior to expiration – this prevent gun owners from being charged with unlawful use of a firearm while waiting to receive their new FOID card in the mail.
    3. The Firearms Restraining Order Act was signed into law in July 2018 and went into effect January 1, 2019. This law allows Courts to issue a 6-month Emergency Order of Protection that can be processed and issued the same day, enabling the Court to temporarily revoke an alleged dangerous person’s FOID card and firearms on an emergency basis.
While these are the three major changes affecting Chicago gun laws in 2019, there are a few minor amendments as well. For example, Illinois hospitals will be required to report involuntary psychiatric admissions to State officials who may then revoke an FOID card. Prior to 2019, individuals could petition the Court for an Order of Protection involving an FOID card and firearm. In 2019, that right was extended to hospitals and places of worship.

Availability of guns is NOT guaranteed in the Constitution. Those that want their guns can get them elsewhere and have them in Chicago.

We are not required by the constitution to allow the SALES of guns within the city limits. You point is moot!

Did you even read this sentence?

Chicago does not control what happens in the rest of the state, despite what this author expects you to believe.

    State laws, not Chicago!

You are desperate to make this about Chicago's laws, but you can't show anything about Chicago's laws, falling back on STATE laws.

And WTF about gun free zones created by Republicans?
I have a CCL and I understand not walking into a liquor store when armed. I also even understand where authorities might not want armed citizens in where political debate can get quite heated.
What I do not understand is, for all intents and purposes, using laws to keep the general public basically disarmed -- as if this will stop people from using guns just like prohibition (in Chicago!!) stopped people from drinking alcohol.

I appreciate where you were going with this, like a worse case scenario, and pointing out the dangers of citizens getting involved with an armed shooter... but as we saw, the gun lobby just point out guys with axes.

Fact is, you don't have to make up any kind of scenario to point out that the US needs gun reform. All you need is actual, factual situations. 2 young lads walk into a school with a bunch of guns and home made bombs (that as I recall thankfully failed) and kill 15 people. You don't need worse case scenarios - what is worse than that?! Oh yes - what has followed. Over and over and over. Despite the clear results of gun reform, seen in other countries that faced their own massacres, the gun lobby cites centuries-old legislation that is being poorly mis-interpretted to imply that Americans have a right to bear arms. And rather than change, or ignore, that poorly written statement, the gun lovers continue to allow their "right" to own a gun to be more important than other people's lives.

It didn't occur to him that Shooter is still using the "Lets go Brandon" (AkA Fuck Joe Biden) moniker to insult members who are acting particularly idiotic. And he must have already forgotten that Shooter doesn't own, and hasn't owned any guns (and never owned an AR 15) for over 45 years.

BREAKING: Senate Releases Bipartisan Gun Bill, Which Focuses on Red Flag Laws, Enhanced Background Checks

Senators working on a bipartisan gun safety bill following a spate of recent mass shootings across the country released the bill’s text Tuesday evening.

The bill, which was drafted by 10 Republicans and 10 Democrats, focuses on red flag laws and enhanced background checks for younger gun buyers. It also focuses on closing the so-called “boyfriend loophole,” NBC News reported.

If the bill becomes law, people who attempt to buy firearms under the age of 21 might be subject to a juvenile background check.

While juvenile records are generally sealed, the text says some might be requested to look for “disqualifying” conduct for prospective gun buyers.

Additionally, states will be offered grants to enact red flag laws, whether they accept them or not.

Red flag laws, where enacted, can compel people viewed as a danger to themselves or to others to refrain from buying firearms or to surrender guns they already own.

Everytown for Gun Safety explains the he boyfriend loophole:

Federal law prohibits domestic abusers from having guns, but only if they have been married to, have lived with, or have a child with the victim. It does not otherwise prohibit abusive dating partners from having guns. This gap in the law is known as the “boyfriend loophole” and has become increasingly deadly.

In a statement, senators said the changes in the bill will keep people safe from gun violence. The statement reads,

Today, we finalized bipartisan, commonsense legislation to protect America’s children, keep our schools safe, and reduce the threat of violence across our country. Our legislation will save lives and will not infringe on any law-abiding American’s Second Amendment rights. We look forward to earning broad, bipartisan support and passing our commonsense legislation into law.

The statement was signed by Sens. Chris Murphy, (D_CT), John Cornyn, (R-TX), Kyrsten Sinema, (D-AZ) and Thom Tillis (R-NC).

The full text is 90 pages long and can be read here.

A procedural vote on the bill is expected Tuesday night.

It's really not much in and of itself (compared to other countries following these massacres of innocents), but it's a start. Hopefully it can be built on in future toward some more meaningful change.

64 is a big number. Four more than needed to break any filibuster.

Senate votes 64-34 to advance John Cornyn's gun legislation 4 weeks after Uvalde massacre: report

Exactly four weeks after a teenage gunman armed with a semiautomatic rifle massacred 19 elementary schoolers and two teachers in Uvalde, the U.S. Senate voted 64-34 Tuesday night to advance a bipartisan compromise that, if enacted, would become the first major legislation on gun safety since 1994.

The legislation does not restrict any rights of existing gun owners — a non-starter for Senate Republicans. Instead, it would enhance background checks for gun purchasers younger than 21; make it easier to remove guns from people threatening to kill themselves or others, and people who have committed domestic violence; clarify who needs to register as a federal firearms dealer; and crack down on illegal gun trafficking, including so-called straw purchases, which occur when the actual buyer of a firearm uses another person to execute the paperwork to buy on their behalf.

The legislation also includes $11 billion for mental health services and $2 billion for community-based anti-violence programs. It also includes money to help young patients access mental health services via telemedicine, money for more school-based mental health centers, and support for suicide hotlines.

Republican John Cornyn, the senior senator from Texas, who was formally rebuked by the Republican Party of Texas on Saturday evening for taking part in bipartisan negotiations, said he felt confident that senators would see the deal as a reasonable compromise. If it holds up, that would itself be an extraordinary achievement after years in which mass shootings have devastated American communities, with numbing reality.

“This is an issue that divides much of the country, depending on where you live, and maybe divides people living in the same household. But I think we have found some areas where there’s space for compromise and we’ve also found that there are some red lines and no middle ground,” Cornyn said on the floor of the Senate. “We’ve talked, we’ve debated, we’ve disagreed and finally we’ve reached an agreement among the four of us but obviously this is not something that is going to become law or fail to become law because of a small group of senators. The truth is we had a larger group of 20 senators, 10 Republicans and 10 Democrats, come together and sign on to an agreed set of principles, and I believe that as the senators see the text that supports those principles, they will see we’ve tried our best to be true to what those agreed principles should be.”

The release on Tuesday evening of the 80-page Bipartisan Safer Communities Act came after 20 senators — with the Democrats led by Chris Murphy of Connecticut, and the Republicans by Cornyn — worked to translate a broad framework agreement into specific language. The Senate voted 64-to-34, less than two hours after the final text was circulated, to put the legislation on a path to pass the Senate by the end of the week.

The Senate Republican leader, Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, quickly endorsed the text of the legislation, while the National Rifle Association immediately opposed it. While gun rights remain a powerful element of Republican politics, the N.R.A. itself has become a politically weaker force, partly because of financial and other scandals.

The Senate vote capped a momentous day as Texas grapples with the aftermath of the May 24 tragedy, the deadliest school shooting in its history. Earlier on Tuesday, a Texas Senate committee held a marathon hearing in which the director of the Texas Department of Public Safety squarely blamed the Uvalde schools police chief for what he called an inexcusable hour-plus delay in fatally confronting the gunman. Critics have asked whether some of the 19 students and 2 two teachers might have survived had the delay not occurred; one teacher died on the way to the hospital.

The Uvalde schools police chief, Pete Arredondo, was elected to the Uvalde City Council before the shooting, and had asked for a leave of absence from those duties. On Tuesday, the council denied that request. (The school police report to the school board, not the City Council.)

Also on Tuesday night, the mayor of Uvalde, Don McLaughlin, accused the Department of Public Safety of selectively leaking transcripts, video footage and other materials to the press to portray local authorities as inept.

“Someone has chosen to release bits and pieces of body cams, surveillance videos of their choosing,” the mayor said, “to create chaos in our community and keep the whole truth from coming out.”

Yes - I noticed that, too. They only needed 10 Republicans, but they got 14! That was brilliant, even though the "reforms" are ultimately very minor. But a great first step. Those 14 Republicans can now start to see the truth.

@thinskin said (in a rather plaintive tone), Nobody wants to carry a gun in my country.
That's great. I'm glad for you -- and for the fact that you're not in Chicago.
But I'm sure that Putin feels even happier with your country's apparent desire to remain unarmed as they face the headwinds of current history.
